Passenger numbers rise at Abu Dhabi International Airport

Abu Dhabi International Airport handled more than 2 million passengers last month on the back of rising traffic to India and Saudi Arabia.

The total number of passengers passing through the airport rose by 5.6 per cent compared with April last year, when 1.9 million passengers used the airport.

The airport handled 54,382 metric tonnes of cargo in April, a drop of 14.4 per cent from the same period a year ago.

About 1.3 million transfer passengers passed through the airport, up by 6.1 per cent year-on-year.

Traffic to India, which accounted for 18 per cent of total passenger throughout, rose 1.9 per cent year-on-year.

This year, Etihad and its partner Jet Airways added 28 weekly flights and three destinations in India, in phases. Previously, the pair together operated 252 weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and 15 Indian cities.

Saudi Arabia was the second-most popular country, with traffic growing by 17.4 per cent. The busiest routes in the kingdom were to Riyadh and Jeddah during the Umrah season.

The United Kingdom followed in third place as traffic grew by 12 per cent year-on-year.

Etihad, which currently flies twice daily to Sydney, helped increase the traffic to Australia – it grew by 28 per cent in April compared with the same period last year. From October, the airline will upgrade all 14 flights on the route to an A380 aircraft with 496 seats, from the Boeing 777-300ER with 328 seats.
