New chapter for House at Pooh Corner

When the owners of a north-west London house first heard Winnie the Pooh once lived there, they, quite naturally, did not take the claim too seriously.

But after further investigation they discovered there was at least some truth in it.

According to the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, 5 Melina Place was once home to EH Shepard the man who illustrated tales of "that silly old bear", as he called him, by AA Milne.

And fans of the illustrator, who grew to resent his most famous creation for overshadowing his other work, can now buy the property where he lived for £7.5 million (Dh43.8m).

But the address does not qualify for an English heritage plaque as there is already one in place at another of his London properties, 10 Kent Terrace, according to The Telegraph.

But that did not stop the current owners, the Mainz family, from installing their own version of the famous blue plaque on the building.

Beverley Mainz, an artist who has been living there with her family since 1990 told The Telegraph the property had a special "vibe" about it."There is a fabulous atmosphere in the house, as if the place is vibrating with sympathy for art and artists," she said.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom dark brick Georgian property has white sash windows and is located in St John's Wood.

The area's high street has an "English village feel", according to the estate agent Knight Frank. But its Tube station is just two stops from Bond Street.

St John's Wood was one of the first of the London suburbs to have villa-type housing, such as the property for sale, rather than terraced homes which were the norm in 19th century London.

The area remains highly desirable and one of the most expensive in the capital. Former residents of the Melina Place, a cul de sac lane, include Kate Moss.

The lane is just off Abbey Road, where The Beatles recorded their album of the same name.
