Germans wax lyrical on taking a shower

Requisites for a shower are pretty narrow in most people's minds. An abundance of hot water, decent pressure and easy access to some kind of soap would satisfy the majority.

However, the Sensory Sky, from the German shower manufacturer Dornbracht, raises the game entirely.

Launched this year at ISH - the world's leading trade fair for bathrooms - the Sensory Sky claims to offer the feeling of showering in the open air. Various nozzles and sprinklers can be adjusted to different settings, offering the sensation of rain or fog, and there are also choices for light and fragrances.

For those hoping to enjoy this exotic showering experience in their homes, the price is on request as installation costs vary between countries.

However, the company released the Horizontal shower last year - which allows users to lie down while they shower - and that retails for US$35,000. For its latest innovation, Dornbracht envisages three showering scenarios.

The first, called "readjust", aims to invigorate the user and sharpen the senses. This is achieved by setting a temperature-controlled fog of 36-39°C and light rain of 28°C. The smell of fresh meadow herbs and sweet hints of berries will, in theory, reinforce feelings of liveliness after showering. "Pent-up energies are unlocked in an expressive choreography of different kinds of rain, and invigorating changes in temperature and light," the company says.

The second option is "release", which, like heavy summer rain, is meant to cleanse and liberate. The fragrance is refreshing and tropical with hints of citrus fruit and an earthy base.

Finally, there is "rejoice", which claims to protect, envelop and stabilise. The outer, warm rain curtain (35-38°C) becomes "a projection screen for the light effects as water droplets glisten in the colours of the rainbow".

The accompanying fragrance is described as combining fresh, clear notes with a sweet-spicy and woody finish. The fragrances are produced using natural essential oils and balms in collaboration with Kemitron, a specialist for spa and wellness fragrances. It's certainly an expensive way to shower.
