Etihad Airways will deploy the Dreamliner on five routes next year as the Boeing 787 gradually becomes the Abu Dhabi carrier’s flagship long-haul aircraft.
Etihad expects to receive 66 Dreamliners over the coming years.
The 787-9 Dreamliner is Boeing’s high-tech fuel-efficient aircraft. Etihad received its first one last December.
Starting from May next year, Etihad will deploy the 299-seat plane to Düsseldorf, Perth, Shanghai, Istanbul and Johannesburg. It already flies five 787s to Brisbane, Washington, Singapore and Zurich from Abu Dhabi.
Etihad aims to use the Dreamliner to help it dominate the luxury traveller segment. The Abu Dhabi carrier raised the stakes of premium travel last year when it decided to revamp the interiors of its 787s and its Airbus A380s.
Etihad’s 787 is configured with 28 business “studios” with larger seats that convert into flat beds – in addition to 271 economy seats. The new aircraft displays Etihad’s “contemporary modern Arabian design”, which was introduced during the relaunch of its livery last year.
For the A380, Etihad unveiled “The Residence by Etihad” on the upper deck of the superjumbo aircraft. The Residence accommodates single or double occupancy. It includes a living room, a separate double bedroom and an en suite shower room. Guests in The Residence also have a personal butler trained by the Savoy Butler Academy in London.
The big three Arabian Gulf carriers have invested hundreds of billions of dollars in expanding their fleets, with the 787 and the A380 featuring largely among those purchases.
Emirates said on Thursday that it too would deploy its A380 to more destinations across its network next year.
Birmingham, Prague and Taipei have been added to the list of Emirates A380 destinations, the Dubai-based carrier said.
Emirates is the only airline to operate a scheduled A380 service from each of these destinations.

No more lice
Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.
