Emerging Elelctricity Systems (EES), a Pakistani alternative energy company, has installed the world's largest solar-powered telecommunications tower near Dubai, according to the company's chairman, Salim Mastan. On behalf of du, the Dubai-based mobile phone services provider, EES has been retrofitting telecommunications towers across the emirate with solar panels, and hauling away polluting diesel generators. The video above, courtesy of Mr Mastan, documents EES's work on one such tower, disguised as a palm tree. The company's solar panels are designed to provide uninterrupted daytime service, even in the event of rain or three days' continuous cloud cover, which is rare but not unheard of in the UAE. More common in Dubai are haze and dust storms. We take it that EES's solar panels can handle haze, but they still may need frequent wiping to keep dust under control.
