The Emirates president Tim Clark said that his airline will "adjust our business model" should Airbus stop making the A380.

The Dubai carrier operates the world’s biggest fleet of the superjumbo aircraft. In December, Airbus flagged up the possibility of stopping the production of the A380 because of poor sales.

"If they are not in the market, then we will try and load them as long as we can, and we will take Airbus to support them as long as they need to be supported. But at the end, we will need to adjust our business model to what is available at the time," said Mr Clark.

Emirates currently operates the A380 to 33 destinations including London, Los Angeles and New York.

The airline has been insisting that Airbus improve the fuel efficiency of the A380. It said it could order 100 additional aircraft if a better engine is available.

According to some analysts, A380s work better for fast-growing airlines such as the Gulf carriers. The hub model of Gulf airlines helps to fill the double-decker jet.

Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways started operating the A380 for the first time last year.
