Dubai’s Rera rent calculator your best friend when lease renewal comes

We are due to renew the lease on our apartment on November 1, but the estate agent advised us of the new rental amount last week. The rent is to increase from Dh62,000 to Dh75,000 per annum. I have looked at the Real Estate Regulatory Agency (Rera) rental calculator and it says there should be no increase. What can I do? AB, Dubai

In this case the Rera rental calculator shows that the rent being paid is in line with amounts payable for this category of property in the Al Karama area and so no increase can be requested at renewal. All tenants must be given 90 days' notice of any increase. This means that on two counts AB is not required to pay any more than the current amount of rent when his lease renews.
