Arabtec wins contracts worth Dh623 million

Arabtec has won contracts to build projects in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah valued at Dh623 million (US$169.62m).

The Dubai construction company, the largest in the region, has signed on to build two residential towers in the capital.

One tower will be 45 storeys, the other 40 storeys, and the total project will cover 900,000 square metres, the company said.

Arabtec will handle "all the enabling and structural works, mechanical, electrical and plumbing works and all fit-out works, as well as external landscaping" for the project, it said.

The company did not disclose further details of the project, which is valued at Dh552m. Company officials did not return calls seeking comment.

The deal is relatively small for a company the size of Arabtec.

But any projects are good news for the company, said Majed Azzam, an analyst with Alembic HC Securities. "Activity did slow down significantly, but there are projects going on," Mr Azzam said.

He added that it was difficult to gauge the impact of the contract without knowing more details, including whether it is a government or private project.

Several of Arabtec's announced projects in Dubai have not materialised, he noted.

"Abu Dhabi is definitely safer than Dubai, but there is still some risk," he said. Arabtec will also build a 16-storey, 14,000-square-metre "staff accommodation" building in Ishwais, Fujairah, the company said. That contract is valued at Dh71m.

In recent months Arabtec has been diversifying its portfolio away from Dubai, launching projects in Syria, Bahrain, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

In October, 44 per cent of its projects in development were in Dubai, according to a research report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Only 10 per cent of its portfolio was government projects, considered the most reliable development deals.

Arabtec's stock surged 9 per cent early last month on speculation that it would benefit from Qatar's successful bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In June the company was awarded a $143m contract to build the World Trade Center in Qatar.

Arabtec closed unchanged at Dh2.04 yesterday.
