A new feature on Twitter will allow users to broadcast audio, through the already existing live streaming Periscope video platform.

Periscope, which was added as an option for Twitter users in 2016, did not prove as popular as a way to live stream as the company hoped, taking a backseat to Facebook and Youtube. The new move means that Twitter can change the focus of Periscope toward live podcasts and audio-first content.

The latest description on Twitter reads: "Now, you can go live with audio only, so your viewers can hear (but not see) you!"

With the new feature, users can broadcast audio and use the chatroom and other Periscope interactive features at the same time. The app creates an audio wave that renders to match the audio being broadcast by the streamer.

The audio only option could prove popular for people reporting live from where they don't have a good internet connection or they don't want to be seen. For now the service is only available for IOS users.
