Tommy Ramone, a co-founder of the seminal punk band Ramones and the last surviving member of the original group, has died. He was 62. Dave Frey, who works for Ramones Productions, says Ramone's wife told him he died on Friday. Ramone co-founded the Ramones in 1974 in New York along with the singer Joey Ramone, the bassist DeeDee Ramone and the guitarist Johnny Ramone. The band influenced a generation of rockers and their hit songs I Wanna Be Sedated and Blitzkrieg Bop, among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. – AP
Sanjeev Bhaskar to star in Doctor Who
Sanjeev Bhaskar, best known for starring in the British television show The Kumars at No 42, is set to appear in a forthcoming episode of Doctor Who. The comedian will reportedly play a significant role in the final episode of the new series. Bhaskar has lent his voice to Doctor Who audio stories, but this will be his first appearance on the show. "I'm thrilled to have made a small contribution to – and now be part of – the Doctor Who universe. Another dream box ticked." he said. Doctor Who will see Peter Capaldi in the title role. – IANS
Charlie Haden dies at 76
The bassist Charlie Haden, who helped change the shape of jazz more than a half-century ago as a member of Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking quartet and liberated the bass from its traditional rhythm-section role, died on Friday in Los Angeles. He was 76. During his career, Haden's lyrical bass playing was heard in a range of genres from jazz to country to world music. "I want to take people away from the ugliness and sadness around us every day and bring beautiful, deep music to as many people as I can," Haden said in a 2013 interview shortly before receiving a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. – AP
Kareena hails Shetty as new Desai
Kareena Kapoor says the director Rohit Shetty, who has mastered the art of churning out fast-paced, action-packed dramas such as last year's Chennai Express, is the Manmohan Desai of the current generation. Desai, the filmmaker behind the 1970s and 1980s hits such as Amar Akbar Anthony, Naseeb, Coolie and Mard, catered to popular audiences with masala potboilers. "I chose to do Singham Returns because it's a Rohit Shetty film. I am a huge fan of Rohit and according to me, Rohit is the Manmohan Desai of this generation," said Kapoor, who also featured in Shetty's 2010 hit comedy Golmaal 3. – IANS
Trey Songz tops Billboard chart
The R&B singer Trey Songz debuted at No 1 on the weekly Billboard 200 chart with his new album Trigga. Ed Sheeran's X dropped to second place, while another British singer and songwriter, Sam Smith, dropped one spot to No 3 with In the Lonely Hour. Smith's track Stay with Me topped the digital songs chart, narrowly edging, for the second straight week, the Canadian reggae fusion band Magic!'s song Rude. – Reuters
