TV actor Todd Buonopane plays Amos Hart in the Broadway musical Chicago. He spoke to us about his playing the part of a simple man married to the murderess Roxie Hart.
When did you audition for the role? I first auditioned for Chicago about 4 years ago. I've always been a little young for Amos, but my agent heard they were looking to pair a young guy with a younger Roxie. Walter Bobbie, the director, approved me then, but it took more than 3 years for me to get a chance to do it!
Were you looking to be cast in this role? Oh yes! I am definitely an Amos. I look right for the part and emotionally I really get this guy.
Hart aside, is there any other character you find interesting? I love all the characters in CHICAGO, but none as much as Amos. He is the one with a heart. And has a very clear emotional journey. I'm Amos and I wouldn't want it any other way.
What is the most challenging or interesting aspect of the character? The hardest thing about playing Amos is allowing yourself to be simple. Everyone else gets to be big and showy, but Amos is just a guy. He gets his one big moment, but other than that, he's just a simple, honest guy.
How much time do you give to this production? Putting a show of this caliber together takes a lot of time. Honestly, I have one of the easiest jobs. The dancers put in a great deal of time. And our technical crew that makes everything look and sound great put in even more time.
What can the audience in Dubai expect from this production? The Dubai audience can expect a first rate performance of one of the best musicals ever written. Our cast is top notch! From me, they can expect an honest, funny, and heartbreaking performance. I'm quite proud of my work in this show, and I'm excited to get to share it with the people of Dubai!
