Today's entertainment news: Jackson fans leave tribute at auction site

Dozens of Michael Jackson fans left behind tributes to the king of pop at an auction of items from the singer's final home, where he died in 2009.

On Sunday, Julien's Auctions invited fans to preview its exhibit of the home's art and furnishings before it opens to the public. It also encouraged fans to leave pictures, flowers and other handmade trinkets that will be delivered to the Jackson family.

"This means a lot because we don't have a place to go [to leave things for the family]," said Christine Tucker, a spokeswoman for the Official Michael Jackson Fans of Southern California. About 25 members of the fan club spent the weekend making handmade Christmas ornaments for the tribute.

"He inspires us to create," she said.

Fans also left plush toys and handwritten letters."Team MJ San Diego loves Michael Jackson," one note reads. "We miss you," says another.

Julien's Auctions was commissioned to sell the contents of Jackson's Neverland Ranch in April 2009. One of its most recent sales was Jackson's Thriller jacket for US$1.8 million (Dh6.6m).

The latest auction will be held on Saturday.

Bus company offers Baldwin a free ride

After the actor Alec Baldwin was taken off an American Airlines flight last Tuesday - for playing Words with Friends, an addictive Scrabble-like online game - he lampooned the incident on Saturday Night Live and on The Huffington Post, writing that flight attendants "have made flying a Greyhound bus experience".

American Airlines has already called Baldwin "extremely rude" for his actions and now Greyhound has responded, only with an unexpected invitation from no less than the bus company's chief executive.

According to a report by CNN, the chief executive Dave Leach has written an open letter to Baldwin, inviting the actor to a free journey.

"I invite you to meet with me in New York and we'll take a trip to Boston so you can see first-hand what a great ride Greyhound can be", Leach writes.

He reminded Baldwin that Greyhound has added extra legroom, leather seats, power outlets and free Wi-Fi in its buses.

"I think you especially would find the latter two amenities exciting because we don't require our customers to turn off their electronic devices ... ever. You could therefore play Words with Friends during your entire trip and nobody would give you any grief over it."

Baldwin has not responded to the offer. He deactivated his Twitter account after the American Airlines incident.

Shah Rukh Khan eyes comic hero role

The Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has expressed interest in playing the role of a cult comic hero named Bahadur, the protagonist of Abid Surti's extremely popular Indrajal comic, reports TheTimes of India.

Bahadur is a famous literary figure in India and many filmmakers have tried unsuccessfully to adapt the 1970s comic for the big screen - until now.

The film, titled Bahadur vs Bahadur, will be directed by Kabir Sadanand, whose latest film Tum Milo Toh Sahi was critically acclaimed.

Sadanand told the Mumbai Mirror: "Bahadur has been a character that has always inspired me. We will be in a better position to talk about the film within a couple of months."

Meryl Streep covers Vogue magazine - finally

In the first such cover for the 62-year-old actress, Meryl Streep graces the cover of Vogue magazine and jokes in the accompanying article she is the "oldest person" to do so.

And while Streep may be considered one of the finest actresses around, she says she believed her career was over 20 years ago.

In the interview she says she was offered three different roles to play a witch after turning 40. She believed it meant women in her age group were "grotesque on some level", and told her husband "it's over".

Streep's next role sees her as the former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in the new film Iron Lady. She'll portray Thatcher from age 49 to 85 in the film, which hits cinemas next month.
