Lil Jon to perform in Dubai
The Grammy-winning rapper Lil Jon is set to perform at the Nasimi Beach in Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai on September 13. The 41-year-old Jon, real name Jonathan Smith, is best known for his 2010 album Crunk Rock. The performance will also feature sets from DJs Teddy Jam, Ray and David Craig. Tickets, priced at Dh200 each, are available at www.platinumlist.net and at the doors, which open at 6pm. The event is for those age 21 and over only.
Salma Hayek: I'm proud to be Mexican
After German Vogue quoted her as saying she "hardly had any memories of what it is to be Mexican", Salma Hayek says her comments were "lost in translation". "I've never denied my background," she said in a statement. "I've taught my child to embrace her heritage, to love my first language ... and even the Mexican candy I grew up with. It saddens me when my words are taken out of context to hurt the people of Mexico, whom I love." - AP
Scott's notes didn't say reason for death
According to reports from the Los Angeles County coroner's office, notes left behind by the director Tony Scott did not give a motive for why he killed himself. The notes also did not mention any health issues. The 68-year-old Scott died last Sunday after leaping from a Los Angeles bridge. Coroner's officials are treating his death as a probable suicide. One of the notes left in his car was a list of emergency contacts and another included messages to loved ones. A private memorial service was held for Scott yesterday at the Hollywood Forever cemetery, directly behind the studio lot of Paramount Pictures, where Scott made Top Gun, the film that jump-started his career. - AP
Vivienne Jolie-Pitt to star with mum
The four-year-old Vivienne Jolie-Pitt is making her movie debut alongside her mum. Angelina Jolie's youngest daughter will play a minor role in Maleficent, in which Jolie plays the title character. Vivienne is set to play a young Princess Aurora, who grows up to be evil Maleficent's target in the live-action Sleeping Beauty tale from Walt Disney. Production began in London in June. Maleficent is set to hit theatres in March 2014. - AP
Taylor Swift to debut new song at VMAs
Taylor Swift will perform a new song from her forthcoming album at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 6. "It's such a different song than anything I've ever put out before," she says in a video promo. Swift's first single We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, from her new album Red, set a digital sales record for a female artist, selling 623,000 copies. Previously announced VMA performers include Green Day, Alicia Keys, Pink and One Direction. Drake and Rihanna lead with five nominations each. - AP
