All was fine and dandy at the Gulf Film Festival, which opened last night at Dubai's Festival City. But then, out of nowhere, The National suddenly made an explosive appearance during the press screening for some of the Gulf Students' Shorts. The film in question (and pictured above) is London in a Headscarf, a documentary by Emirati Mariam Al Sarkal, a film student studying in London. The short begins steadily enough, with Al Sarkal discussing her decision to go and what it's like living outside of the UAE. But then, she reads in our beloved National and starts looking to discover what people really feel about Emirati women who move overseas and whether it could affect her possibilities for a traditional Emirati marriage. London in a Headscarf - which won a Special Mention at last year's Dubai International Film Festiva - proves to be a rather interesting documentary, with Al Sarkal discussing the issue with both her family back in the UAE and European friends in London. It also documents her enter a pub for the first time, an experience she notes for its distinct - and rather unpleasant - smell. London in a Headscarf is showing on Thursday April 12 at 2.15pm in Grand Festival Cinema 12 and again on Saturday April 14 at 4pm in Grand Festival Cinema 9. It's also showing on Friday April 13 at 3pm at the Abu Dhabi Theatre.
