Unless you're one of those stubborn people who refuses point blank to take notice of someone who is desperately seeking attention, you might have heard that Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing out a new film. And, surprise surprise, it's not an emotional family drama. The Dictator (as if you didn't know) follows the story of one General Aladeen of the Republic of Wadiya, a comedic creation supposedly based on Saddam Hussein with a hefty splash of Gaddafi thrown in for good measure. Anyway, without going into the film too much (although, it's fair to say it's going to be extremely silly), Baron Cohen and his cohorts have been upping the excitement through a variety of elaborate means (tipping Kim Jung-Il's ashes over Ryan Seacrest at the Oscars was a good place to start), one of which is General Aladeen's official twitter account. With over 60,000 followers, Cohen's team of writers, I mean Aladeen has been spouting all sorts of nonsense over the past few months. - Have officially changed current season to Summer to avoid Arab Spring. - 80,000 are currently camping outside Wadiya's Apple Store in bid to be first to buy me a new iPad! - Congratulations to my friend Putin! Ignore the critics - Wadiyan Election Monitors found no irregularities with his victory ...being just a few. It's all highly enjoyable, borderline offensive stuff, and is likely to ensure far more bums on seats when the film is eventually released next month. If Hosni Mubarak had been this adept at utilising social media, maybe, well....
