Researching a piece about the William Kentridge animations currently at DUCTAC (due in Monday's paper), really brought home the brilliance of this South African artist.
His charcoal drawings, painstakingly drawn onto paper then photographed, then erased and then redrawn to create a stop-go animation, have a wonderful exuberance to them and real individuality of style.
To whet appetites, here's 'Tide Tables' from 2003 (below), included in the DUCTAC show of 17 South African video artists and a great introduction to the other eight Kentridge works in there.
Take note of Philip Miller's incredible score - a mix of choral African music and hints of Dvorak - has really stood the test of time and gives the work its melancholic atmosphere.
, the new show at Ductac until February 6
