The Cannes Film Festival has become the place where the big regional film bodies from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha launch their industry initiatives.
* The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) announced two international partnerships. Eurimages - the fund that supports European film production - will for the first time hold its fund meeting outside of Europe and at DIFF in December. The move aims to help Eurimages members engage with Arab filmmakers and film bodies and generate potential partnerships and funding opportunities. The festival also announced a partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Centre. The New York-based organisation will show 10 feature films later this year that were supported by the Dubai Film Market.
* twofour54 and the Abu Dhabi Film Commission announced the first production incentive scheme in the region as they try to encourage film producers to make use of the facilities on offer to filmmakers in Abu Dhabi. Starting on September 1, a rebate of up to 30 per cent of qualifying spending in Abu Dhabi will be available for feature film, TV, documentary and music video production.
* The Doha Film Institute chose Cannes as the platform to showcase a pioneering seven-screen film, Cruel Summer, directed by the music superstar Kanye West. Part art installation, part music video, part short film, the project was entirely shot in Qatar. Surprisingly, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival has yet to unveil its date for this year's festival.
* The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture based in Beirut announced the films that will participate in the first Crossroads Workshops. The aim is to fund cultural projects in the Arab world. Crossroads will provide financial and professional support to selected projects in the development stage and accompany them through production.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
