Plant profile: Spider lily

Crinum asiaticum is relatively easy to grow in the UAE and likes humid conditions.

Because of its tolerance for heat and overall hearty nature, the umbrella-like Crinum asiaticum, or spider lily, is perfect for growing in the UAE. The ornamental plant is native to southern China, Hong Kong, Jeju-do in South Korea and Taiwan, but has been naturalised in Mexico, the West Indies, parts of the southern United States and Madagascar.

The Crinum is relatively easy to grow and is typically found as a pot or border plant. It’s best grown in slightly filtered sunlight, which allows its sweetly scented flowers to sprout.

While it enjoys humid conditions and tolerates salt, over-watering may rot its bulbs.

For those with small children, be advised that not only are all parts of the plant poisonous, causing severe discomfort if ingested, but the sap may also cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction.
