Last week, I took a tour of the latest construction on Reem Island, specifically the Shams Abu Dhabi project under development by Sorouh Real Estate . It's always a surprise to see how much is going on there because from the main island, all you can see is a few towers jutting out of the ground. From the vantage of one of the buildings, however, you can see all kinds of construction under way. At Sun Tower (the smaller of the two), they have started fitting out apartments, which have lovely views of the surrounding waterways and Abu Dhabi. The only problem - and I think it wouldn't be a big problem for me - is that construction sites would surround your life 24 hours a day for the next several years. Still, Shams Abu Dhabi is facing some difficulties. A group of sub-developers are having trouble meeting their obligations to Sorouh. We at Crane Country expect there will need to be a serious financial partner brought in to take care of all these troubled companies and find a way to continue construction on their buildings.
