Louvre re-examines legacy of Baroque master
Nicolas Poussin was one of the main practitioners of the baroque style, and considered, by some, as one of the most accomplished French artists of all time. But today, Poussin is ranked far behind painters such as Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse. There are still a few weeks, however, to catch this exhibition in Paris, which marks the 350th anniversary of Poussin's death and re-evaluates his legacy. It brings together 99 of his works, including paintings, drawings and prints, and also seeks to re-evaluate his engagement with religious themes. Poussin and God runs at the Louvre until June 29. Modern art museum moves into ex-Soviet site
The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 2008 by Dasha Zhukova (wife of oligarch Roman Abramovich) and has had several homes since. However, it has just moved into a permanent site in Moscow's Gorky Park, once a Soviet-era pavilion. A number of events will run over the summer, including the first solo exhibition in the capital of Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist renowned for her work with coloured dots. Another exhibition will show rare photographs from the Moscow underground of the 1960s. All exhibitions began on Friday, to coincide with the museum's move. Works by avant-garde duo go under the hammer
An interesting aspect to a sale of modern and impressionist art in London is the presence of works by Robert and Sonia Delaunay. It is rare, according to Bonhams, that works from both come up at the same auction, and Robert's Les coureurs à pied could sell for up to £300,000 (Dh1.68 million). The Delaunays were co-founders of the Orphism movement, known for its use of geometry and strong colour; Sonia is currently the subject of a retrospective at Britain's Tate Modern. Works by Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger are also part of the auction. The Impressionist and Modern Art sale takes place in London on June 24. For more information visit www.bonhams.com.
