Old pro Mohammed Mounir keeps his band on their toes. When you have been performing for more than four decades, you know exactly what you want on stage. This is what Mohammed Mounir demonstrated in his free public sound-check on Sunday at Morocco’s Mawazine Festival. Mohammed Mounir sound checks for the 2013 Mawazine Festival Strolling on stage at 5pm in flip-flops and tracksuit – where his band were already rehearsing for an hour – the Egyptian legend went through his vocal paces and chastised the piano player’s sloppy performance. Mounir then grabbed a fistful of dates before returning to his hotel to rest. His stern words had the desired effect as the band were tight and funky as Mounir busted out the classics Habba Habba, Ya Hobbenna Ya Kabeer and the Nubian folk song Waneney. Stay tuned to Scene and Heard for all the festival action from Mawazine.
