Jazz, soul and hip-hop with new concert season hosted by Alliance Française Dubai

Lovers of interesting sounds should be thrilled to hear about a new season of concerts being cooked up by the Alliance Française Dubai.

With an eclectic booking policy, and using venues throughout the emirate, the cultural haven will showcase inimitable French jazz, soul and hip-hop with three regular gigs which open the 2015/16 season.

Things begin on October 21 with a previously announced concert from jazz singer Laïka Fatien, who will perform at Madinat Jumeirah restaurant Frioul. The Paris-based talent burst onto the scene in 2008 with debut album Misery, A Tribute to Billie Holiday, backed by stars including pianist Robert Glasper, saxophonist David EL-Malek, bassist Daryl Hall and drummer Gregory Hutchinson.

Next up pianist/composer Laurent de Wilde will stop off on his Asian tour, leading a trio in a concert on November 21, at a venue yet to be confirmed. Grounded in the jazz tradition but known for his restless creative spirit, de Wilde has worked with artists including Diane Tell, Abd Al Malik and Jacques Gamblin.

The year wraps in spectacular style with a show from sassy neo-soul/hip-hop talent Laetitia Dana. Mixing influences traditional and contemporary, from classic jazz to the Parisian underground, distinctly danceable Dana will perform in December at a venue and date to be confirmed.

Each of these three concerts offer a one-off chance to hear a singular musical talent live in Dubai – so diaries at the ready, people.

How the bonus system works

The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.

The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.

There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).

All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.

What drives subscription retailing?

Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.

The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.

The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.

The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.

UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.

That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.

Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
