Hugh Jackman in real-life beach rescue drama

Actor Hugh Jackman rescued his children and other swimmers from a rip tide at Bondi Beach at the weekend. In a video obtained by a news channel, the Wolverine star could be seen grabbing the arm of a man and pulling him to safety while the man held onto Jackman's daughter, according to aceshowbiz.com. Jackman then helped his 15-year-old son, Oscar, escape from the same strong current. The actor was also seen waving to warn other swimmers and get them to come ashore. Lifeguards also leapt into action, using boards and jetskis to rescue several swimmers. The North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club took to Instagram to thank the lifeguards and Jackman for their actions. The actor arrived in Sydney on Friday, after a month-long stint promoting his latest film Eddie the Eagle, a biopic about the much-loved British ski jumper Eddie Edwards. Miley Miley and Alicia Keys join The Voice

Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys will be judges on the next season of US reality-TV singing contest The Voice when it begins in September. NBC said this will be the first time the show's four-person judging panel has featured two women. Cyrus and Keys will join mainstays Blake Shelton and Adam Levine on what is one of television's most popular reality shows. Both women have experience on the show – Cyrus is an adviser this season and Keys was a mentor during a previous season. While Shelton and Levine have been regular judges, NBC tends to rotate other judges on the panel dependent upon their performance schedules – so previous judges including Christina Aguilera, Pharrell and Gwen Stefani remain in the mix. Stefani, for example, has been a mentor this season. – AP

Mariah Carey cancels Brussels gig for security fears

Mariah Carey cancelled her concert in Brussels, planned for yesterday, over security fears after last week's terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital. A website selling tickets for her European tour said the show would no longer take place. A message to fans posted on Carey's Twitter account confirmed that this was due to concerns about security. The message said Carey had been advised to cancel the show to protect her crew and fans. There was no indiction whether the show will be rescheduled, but subsequent tweets said that Carey hopes to see fans in Belgium at a later date. Her concert in Luxembourg on Saturday went ahead as scheduled. – AP

AC/DC star’s son says Axl Rose will join tour

Ross Malcolm Young, son of founding AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young, has seemingly confirmed rumours that Axl Rose will join the band to complete their tour after the departure of singer Brian Johnson. It was reported that he had been ordered to stop performing live on medical grounds, at the risk of going deaf. Young commented on Facebook over the weekend about the rumours, and when a fan suggested that he was "opening a can of worms" by linking to the story, Young responded, "It's true." When a fan was critical of the decision to invite Axl to join the band, saying it would hurt AC/DC's legacy, Young said the decision had already been made. He later deleted the post. If correct, it will be interesting to see how the Guns n'Roses frontman's notoriously slack attitude to timekeeping goes down with fans of the famously hard-working Australian rockers. – The National staff

Superheroes soar at global box office

Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice attracted decidedly mixed reviews from critics, but audiences are voting with their wallets by flocking to see the movie. It earned US$82m (Dh301m) in North America on its opening day on Friday, including $27.7m from Thursday previews. It also pulled in $67.2m internationally on Friday, according to estimates from Warner Bros, including a record opening day in China, where it scooped $20m, to bring the international haul to $115m. The movie also clocked the highest Thursday pre-show numbers for an Easter weekend, almost doubling the previous $15.8m record set by Furious 7. – AP

The Rock may run for the White House

Furious 7 star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has hinted that he might like to run for president of the United States in the future. The actor expressed his political dreams after fans put together an article highlighting all the reasons "The Rock should run", according to eonline.com. "Cool piece on why I should run for president. Maybe one day. Surely, the White House has a spot for my pickup truck," Johnson posted on Twitter. He is currently filming Baywatch, a big-screen reboot of the classic 1980s and 1990s American TV show, which also stars Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra. – IANS
