Home improvements: Simple tree decorations

The festive season is upon us, and while heading to the shops to buy Christmas tree ornaments might be easy, making your own will be far more rewarding – and save you a fair few dirhams.

We love the idea of creating name ornaments out of old Scrabble tiles – this is a particularly fun activity to do with children. Hot-glue the letters together to spell out a name, and allow to dry. Then grab a piece of silver ribbon, and glue both ends to the back of the ornament. Make sure the ribbon is centred, so that when you hang the ornament, it doesn’t tilt. We guarantee that children will love seeing their names hung up on the tree.

Alternatively, use any spare bottle tops you have lying around to create a charming snowman. Glue three tops together, placing one on top of the other, to create the head, middle and bottom. Allow to dry, then use black and orange permanent markers to draw the eyes, nose and buttons onto the inside of the caps. Take a piece of thin red ribbon and create a hook by gluing both ends to the back of the head. Once dry, hang the ornament straight on your tree.
