It’s easy to forget about the cleanliness of your make-up utensils, but germs and bacteria can lurk on your brushes and sponges, and contaminate your skin.
Wash your brushes as frequently as possible, ideally after each use. To clean natural hair brushes, wash with a soap/water solution with a neutral pH, and leave to dry – but not in a vertical position, which can damage the wood holding the brush together. You can also apply conditioner to the brush once a month to maintain softness. Brushes made from synthetic fibres should be washed with an alcohol-free cleanser.
When it comes to sponges, disposable ones are the most hygienic option. If you prefer regular sponges, disinfect them with washing liquid and a spritz of rubbing alcohol.
Your make-up bag is often forgotten when it comes to cleaning, but it really shouldn’t be. It’s constantly accumulating germs, contaminating your accessories all over again. Wash it every few months, and keep it fresh in between by cleaning out the inside with a face wipe.
