Home improvements: Make your old jars go far

We always advocate repurposing old items into new and interesting trinkets.

Objects such as mason jars, which seem to magically multiply in cupboards overnight, can be transformed into charming – and functional – items. An obvious solution is to take the tops off and turn them into tealight holders, which look great dotted around the garden. Those with children can transform old mason jars into drinking glasses. Simply poke a hole in the lid and add a colourful straw. The little ones can personalise their own glass with glitter glues and paints.

Plant enthusiasts, meanwhile, can create a small herb garden out of their spare jars. Before adding the soil and seeds, create a label on the jar – either with paint or permanent marker – so you know what you’ve planted. Then place the dirt and herb seeds into the jar, just as you would with a standard plant pot. You can place these outside on the patio, in the garden or in a sunny spot inside your home.

Finally, use your spare jars for freezing various foods, such as soups, sauces and fruit. Mason jars seal well, so your food will last longer.
