Some people fill their bookcases with obvious items – books – but if organised properly, these units can also work as a storage area, helping to save space while acting as a beautiful focal point in a room.
So what should you fill it with? There are a number of items that will work. One thing to keep in mind is the colour scheme, as it relates to the rest of your room. Grab a few matching baskets, family photos, sentimental items, attractive fillers in common colours (this can be anything from empty green glass bottles to pretty scented candles or brass antique lanterns), books and a bit of “bling” (think silver or gold accents).
First, make sure books and baskets fill both the top and bottom shelves to give some balance. They should also be evenly spaced throughout the rest of the unit. Stacking books – largest on the bottom and smallest on top of a single stack – is also a great way to save space.
Family photos and sentimental items should be placed at eye level, while your attractive fillers unify the display. Finally, take your silver or gold accents and place where space is available, limiting to a maximum of one piece per shelf.
