Batman v Superman and Hillary’s America top Razzies list

A documentary that criticises United States Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and superhero ensemble Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has made it on to the list of the year's worst achievements in film. The annual tongue-in-cheek Razzie awards, which serve as an antidote to Hollywood's Oscars ceremony, named Dinesh D'Souza's Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party as the worst film of 2016. D'Souza, a conservative commentator and best-selling author, was named worst actor for narrating his documentary and worst director alongside Bruce Schooley. Worst actress went to the person who portrayed Clinton in the film.

Hillary's America took in a modest $13 million at the North American box office last year. The Razzies, or Golden Raspberry awards, follow a Hollywood awards season marked by outspoken speeches and protests against the policies and behaviour of US President Donald Trump.

Batman v Superman also won four Razzies, including worst screen combo for "Ben Affleck & His BFF (Baddest Foe Forever) Henry Cavill" and worst "remake, rip-off or sequel." The annual Razzie Redeemer Award went to veteran actor-director Mel Gibson. Gibson has been welcomed back into the folds of Hollywood with his war drama Hacksaw Ridge a decade after a drunken anti-Semitic rant made him an outcast. — Reuters

Emma Thompson won’t take part in short ‘Love Actually’ sequel

Actress Emma Thompson says she will not take part in a short Love Actually sequel for Britain's Comic Relief charity appeal because it is "too soon" to reprise her role in the romantic comedy after the death last year of her co-star Alan Rickman. Thompson and Rickman played wife and husband, Karen and Harry, in the hit 2003 movie, which also starred Hugh Grant as the British prime minister and Bill Nighy as an ageing rock star, alongside Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson and Colin Firth. A short film revisiting the characters is in the works for the annual charity appeal, which will hold its fund-raising Red Nose Day and televised evening of celebrity comedy sketches on March 24. Speaking to the BBC last week, director Richard Curtis confirmed some of the first film's big names would take part but added there was a question mark over Thompson's return. Rickman, also known for his roles in the Harry Potter films, died of cancer in January 2016, aged 69. — Reuters

Priyanka Chopra to attend 2017 Oscars

Internationally-acclaimed Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has announced on social media that she will be attending the 89th Academy Awards. Chopra took to Instagram to share the news with her fans while posting a photograph with legendary British singer Mick Jagger. "Change of plans! Oscars here we come. Mick Jagger LA LA Land," Priyanka wrote alongside the image. Indian actress Priyanka Bose is also expected to attend the 2017 Oscars for her film Lion. Chopra, 34, who rose to fame in the West thanks to her lead role as Alex Parrish in TV thriller series Quantico, was one of the presenters at last year's Oscars. — IANS

Katherine Heigl’s ‘Doubt’ cancelled after two episodes

CBS has cancelled legal drama Doubt, starring Katherine Heigl and Laverne Cox, after just two, albeit low-rating episodes, The Hollywood Reporter claims. The series, which was redeveloped and largely recast from last pilot season, will be replaced by a repeat of Bull in Doubt's slot.

The series opened to poor reviews and lacklustre ratings despite heavy promotion. Doubt bowed to a weak rating among adults, coming in last place among shows in the Big Four. — The National Staff
