Dutch designer Marcel Wanders has created the Grandfather Clock, a limited-edition timepiece for French fine silver flatware and home accessories company Christofle.
The state-of-the-art mechanical clock is notable for its oversized proportions and nature-inspired silver etchwork with interlaced leaves, curled fleurs-de-lys blossoms and decorative apples set against a geometric matrix reminiscent of a lush Jardin d’Eden. The clock is part of an exclusive edition of 50, and the owner can customise the three internal clocks to different cities. Wanders will bring the clock to Downtown Design Dubai at the end of October, with three pieces exclusively available to buyers from the Middle East.
Sennheiser
Sennheiser will launch the newest addition to its cabled 500 Series headphones later this month – an ideal purchase for the audiophile purists who are not sold on the wireless headphones and earbuds trend. The HD 599 offers an open around-the-ear design in a matte ivory colour, with a matte metallic deco ring on the ear cup and brown stitching on the headband sleeve. Soft, replaceable ear pads accompany the new headphones, which feature a 35 millimetre, 50 ohm transducer, a three-metre detachable cable and a 6.3mm jack. Also included are a 1.2-metre detachable cable with a 3.5mm jack; a 6.3mm to 3.5mm jack adaptor; and a two-year warranty. Several models will be released alongside the HD 599, including the HD 579, 569 and 559. The HD 599 is priced at Dh999.
Tiffany & Co
"There's a feeling that you can achieve more in a minute in New York, than anywhere else," Jon King, executive vice president of Tiffany & Co, told Luxury magazine last year. The idea of the New York minute – which is "richer, deeper, fuller and faster" – is central to Tiffany & Co's CT watch collection, which has been extended to include two new models. The Tiffany CT60 Bicolor features a fitted bracelet of stainless steel and 18k rose gold, and a bezel and crown in 18k rose gold. The model is offered in three variations: a 42mm chronograph, and 40mm and 34mm three-hand versions. The dial has a white soleil finish and gold poudré, or powder-dusted, numbers, while the three-hand versions have a white flinqué enamel finish. The Tiffany CT60 Dual Time includes a second time zone with red accents. One design offers a 40mm case, in 18k rose gold or stainless steel, with a white soleil finish, gold poudré numerals and a black alligator-skin strap. A second model, with a stainless steel case and bracelet, and a dial with a blue soleil finish and gold poudré numerals, is also available.
Samsung x de Grisogono
It is little secret that luxury brands are jumping on the smartwatch bandwagon. Most recently, Samsung has collaborated with de Grisogono to create the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch, a piece tailored very specifically for female wearers. The timepiece is available with a digital white or black face, and features a galuchat leather strap accompanied by a blackened-steel, triple-folding clasp. The blackened steel case comprises a gold bezel and push buttons, 56 white diamonds on the turning bezel, 28 black diamonds on the top bezel and 43 black diamonds on the sides. Digital elements include an accelerometer, a voice recorder, gyroscope, heart-rate monitor and barometer, in addition to Wi-Fi. You can use the smartwatch to listen to music, check the weather, take phone calls and photographs, and reply to text messages. As the watch offers an edgier look, the Samsung Gear S2 is ideal for women who prefer a slightly less feminine-looking timepiece.
Ferrari
Ferrari's latest four-seater offering, the GTC4Lusso, references several of its illustrious predecessors, including the 330 GTC, its 2+2 sister model, the 330 GT, and the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. The GTC4Lusso offers a touch more horsepower from its V12 engine and reaches 0 to 100kph in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 335kph. In a nod to the FF, the first Ferrari suited to rough terrain, this new model offers a predictive all-wheel-drive system, allowing all four wheels to propel the car forward and enabling it to turn as quickly as it can accelerate. A lowering of the roofline emphasises the vehicle's sportiness, while still providing enough room to fit four occupants. Other highlights include a luggage compartment with ample space and Ferrari's signature twin rear lights. The interior features a more compact steering wheel, the result of a smaller airbag; a new Rain Light AntiFogging Solar Sensor; a climate-control system that achieves the desired temperature 25 per cent faster; and an LCD touchscreen.

Guide to intelligent investing
Investing success often hinges on discipline and perspective. As markets fluctuate, remember these guiding principles:
- Stay invested: Time in the market, not timing the market, is critical to long-term gains.
- Rational thinking: Breathe and avoid emotional decision-making; let logic and planning guide your actions.
- Strategic patience: Understand why you’re investing and allow time for your strategies to unfold.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”
