Fancy creating your own sci-fi film? The Middle East Film and Comic Con are teaming up with the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) for a regional sci-fi filmmaking competition. Aspiring directors of all nationalities across the region are invited to submit a treatment for a locally based film in either the sci-fi, superhero or fantasy tradition. The four-page application should include a brief synopsis of the key plot points, settings and character motivations, as well as special elements of -production. Here’s a hot tip: include plenty of references to Middle Eastern culture. The winning script will be produced by the UAE-based Attitude Enterprises, with artistic guidance provided by the cinematographer Mike Allan, the City of Life director Ali Mostafa and the stylist Sleiman Dayaa. The DIFF managing director Shivani Pandya said the competition could open doors to the international film industry. “One of the DIFF’s main objectives is to nurture creativity and innovation through the art of film, providing aspiring talent with real opportunities through partnerships with skilled industry professionals,” she said. Treatments are to be submitted to competitions@mefcc.com before August 31, after which the panel will choose the winning work and produce the short film over six weeks.
