French actress Catherine Deneuve says social media killed the film star

While many modern-day stars of stage and screen have embraced social media and the selfie to connect with fans and promote their work, at least one veteran actor is not a fan. Just days before her latest film La Tete Haute (Standing Tall) opens this year's Cannes Film Festival, French actress Catherine Deneuve said: "There are no more stars in France." Speaking to the Journal du Dimanche newspaper about her illustrious film career, the 71-year-old had little time for the new generation of celebrities addicted to social media. "A star is someone who must show themselves only a little and remain discreet," she said. "It's wonderful to be able to take photos [with your mobile phone] but I detest selfies, photographing yourself all the time ... it makes everything banal. And this idea that we are looking at ourselves doing things, without actually experiencing them, is horrible." In her latest movie, Deneuve plays a children's magistrate working on the case of a troubled adolescent. Cannes opens tomorrow and runs until May 24. – AFP

Kapoor and Kaif to wed next year

After years of denying his relationship with actress Katrina Kaif, Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor has finally admitted that not only are they romantically involved but they plan to get married by the end of next year. "This year both of us are extremely busy," the 32-year-old actor told the Anandabazar Patrika newspaper. "So there won't be any time for marriage. We have planned to tie the knot by the end of the next year. Both of us have agreed on that. Both of us are sure about our relationship and if we don't open about it now, it would be showing disrespect to the relationship. I am 33 now and it is time I have my family. Even Katrina wants that." Kapoor and Kaif, 31, recently moved into an apartment in a Mumbai suburb. They have acted together in a handful of films and will next be seen on screen in Jagga Jasoos, a comedy-drama due out in November. – The National staff

Prince plays for peace in Baltimore

Prince has performed a concert in Baltimore in front of thousands of fans who were dressed in grey as a tribute to a man whose death in police custody prompted riots. The singer had announced Sunday’s Rally 4 Peace concert at the city’s Royal Farms Arena after weeks of protests over the death of Freddie Gray. During the show, Prince debuted a song he wrote after Gray’s death. “For those who have lost loved ones, we’re here for you tonight,” Prince told the crowd, before launching into a set that included his most famous hits. He also called on the city’s youth to fix a “broken system”. At one point, he welcomed onstage Baltimore’s state attorney, Marilyn Mosby, who has charged six officers in connection with Gray’s death. Gray died after suffering spinal-cord injuries while being transported in the back of a police van. – AP

Joanne Carson dies at age 83

Joanne Carson, the second wife of the late Johnny Carson, host of The Tonight Show, has died. She was 83. Ed Rada, the executor of her estate, said Carson died on Friday at her home in Los Angeles. She had been in declining health for some time and was in hospice care. Born Joanne Copeland, she married Carson in 1963, a year after he began hosting The Tonight Show. After their divorce in 1972, she became close to the writer Truman Capote. He kept a writing room at her house and died there in 1984. Rada says Carson will be interred beside the writer in Los Angeles. Carson had a second marriage late in life, which also ended in divorce. – AP
