The haunted-house horror gets a modern twist in this tale of a woman who must work out who, or what, manipulated her childhood home and caused her sister to disappear. While the plot offers nothing new, the debutant filmmaker Nicholas McCarthy creates a tense and jeopardy-filled atmosphere that never quite lets the viewer feel at ease. Standard devices such as hidden rooms and sudden, invisible attacks are used cleverly, as is the basic but likeable duo of Caity Lotz in the lead and Casper Van Dien as a local policeman who eventually becomes her ally. While most serviceable as a mindless, late-night scare, The Pact makes up with atmosphere and grounded storytelling what it lacks in originality.
