The eagerly anticipated and already notorious film, Fifty Shades of Grey, is under review by the National Media Council.
The Media Content Tracking Department, responsible for assessing the content of potential UAE releases, have confirmed the erotically themed film is in their possession, despite rumours to the contrary.
Juma Al Leem, director of the department at the NMC, confirmed on Thursday that the film is currently undergoing the approval process.
However, “it’s still in the cinema with our people there”, he said. “It’s not finished, there is no decision. We are waiting until they write their reports.”
The film is based on E L James’ book of the same name, which features copious amounts of bondage, nudity and sex as the protagonist Anastasia becomes involved in a relationship with the titular Christian Grey.
Early reviews of the celluloid version suggest much of this is sidelined in favour of exploring the personalities of the central characters.
The film’s distributors, Four Star Films in Lebanon, were unavailable for comment, although they stated earlier in the week that the “general consensus” was that the film would not be shown in the UAE.
Mr Al Leem said that a decision may be reached by the end of the day.
