If you have anyone in your family occasionally caught singing along to their beloved songs when watching the classic Disney movies, then a show in Abu Dhabi next month might be the perfect family day out.
Disney Live! will bring a musical extravaganza to the du Forum on Yas Island from February 26 to March 2. It will be the first time that a Disney theatre production has been staged in the Middle East.
The show features an all-star line-up of more than 25 Disney characters.
"This is a show for the entire family and we expect mums and dads to be on their feet with their children, dancing to this well-crafted selection of chart-topping hits mixed with their favourite Disney classics," says Ali Haidary, the chief of Sport & Entertainment Solutions, the company bringing the show to the UAE, along with its presenting partner Abu Dhabi Tourism and Cultural Authority.
Disney Live! is produced by Feld Entertainment, which also produced Disney on Ice in Doha last June.
Mickey Mouse and pals Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy will be grooving along with characters from Disney blockbusters such as The Little Mermaid, Toy Story and Aladdin. There will be different music genres, from hip-hop to jazz, as well as dizzying acrobatics and magical transformations.
"The show features Mickey Mouse becoming a rock star," says Horacio Renna, the vice president of Feld Entertainment Europe, Africa and the Middle East. "This is the first time we have made a Disney show in the rock 'n' roll style."
One of the highlights will be when Aladdin and Princess Jasmine wow the audience by swooping in on a flying carpet and singing one of the most cherished Disney classics, A Whole New World.
A lot of the classic Disney favourites will have a modern twist. In The Little Mermaid's Kiss the Girl, we're told, some of the mermaids will have a surprise take on the song. Sebastian the Crab will crawl out from under a shell to sing his reggae-style hit Under the Sea. Woody and Jessie from Toy Story will be giving the audience a lesson on how to boogie rodeo-style.
"This show has already touched millions of people across the world and now, for the first time, we hope it will touch people in the Middle East," says Haidary.
He hopes Disney Live! will be the first of a series of Disney shows coming to the region. "Abu Dhabi is about family fun – this is an extremely safe destination for families of all nationalities to relax and spend quality time together," says Faisal Al Sheikh, the events bureau director of TCA Abu Dhabi.
The father-daughter team who produce the show, Kenneth and Alana Feld, have selected creative talents whose credits include working with Madonna and winning a Latin Grammy (the choreographer Fred Tallaksen) to designing costumes for Disney theme parks (the designer Cynthia Nordstrom).
• Performances will be at 11am, 3pm and 7pm from February 26 to March 2. Tickets go on sale on Friday and are available at www.ticketmaster.ae and Virgin Megastores. Early bird tickets start at Dh125
