The innovative multi-media artist Nicholas Hanna has come up with a rather smart way to replicate one of the most interesting things about Chinese street life. In big cities and parks in Beijing, it's common to see master calligraphers writing their work on to the pavement in water, daubing wisdom on to the ground that slowly fades away as the day goes by. Hanna has built this water-trickling trike so that it prints Chinese letters straight on to the pavement as he cycles by. Small jets on the back of the trike are orchestrated to "write" the words on to the pavement, and Hanna can cover quite a lot of ground on his three-wheeler. The artist has already become something of a hit in Beijing with this, and it was exhibited in the city's design week in September. He gives some good background on his work in the video . Smart thinking, no? Now could that work for Arabic calligraphy? Snaps of Hanna in action are courtesy of the artist.
