The legendary film and television actor James Garner, whose career spanned television and film, died in Los Angeles on Saturday. He was 86. The star of the 1970s television series The Rockford Files and the film The Notebook (2004) was found dead when an ambulance arrived at his Los Angeles home around 8pm, TMZ reported. Garner starred in a long list of movie classics and co-starred in the 1994 big-screen version of Maverick with Mel Gibson. He was the original Bret Maverick in the TV series of the same name from 1957 to 1962. The cause of death is not yet known. – The National staff
SRK and Roshan salute ‘heroic’ fireman
The Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan have paid tribute to the firemen who on Friday bravely battled a raging fire in the top two floors of a 22-storey building in Mumbai, which also housed Roshan’s office. The fire claimed the life of Nitin Ivalekar, one of 10 firemen trapped in the tower in the suburb of Andheri West. Khan and Roshan later took to Twitter to salute Ivalekar and his colleagues. “Non nobis solum nati sumus. (Not for ourselves alone are we born.) Cicero. Fireman Nitin Yewalekar, u proved that You r a real Hero. R. I. P.,” tweeted Khan. “Respect for the brave firemen who risked their lives today to extinguish d flames. True courage.” – IANS
Bid of US$10,755 wins 1937 Snow White billboard
A large, colourful billboard from the 1937 release of the animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been sold at auction for US$10,755 (Dh39,503). In a statement, Heritage Auctions said it was not identifying the winning bidder. The 6m-x-2.7m billboard was printed in the United Kingdom to promote the Disney film there. It features three scenes, the main one showing a rosy-cheeked Snow White in front of a castle in her classic outfit with bright yellow skirt, surrounded by the dwarfs and other characters from the film. The billboard had been in a private collection for more than a decade. – AP
Big B tipped to be chief guest of International Film Festival of India
The Indian cinema legend Amitabh Bachchan is likely to be the chief guest of the 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) scheduled to take place in Panaji, Goa, from November 20 to 30. With Goa being declared a permanent venue for IFFI, the Entertainment Society of Goa says it will soon draw up a plan to boost film infrastructure in the state. The ESG also said it hopes the state government will consider improving private cinemas in Panaji, “which are presently in poor condition”. – The National staff
Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo are married
Maroon 5’s Adam Levine married his model girlfriend Behati Prinsloo at Flora Farms in Los Cabos, Mexico, on Saturday in front of approximately 275 friends and family, People magazine reported. A source revealed that the bride wore a custom-made Marchesa dress and the guests included Robert Downey Jr, the model Coco Rocha and Levine’s bandmates James Valentine and Jesse Carmichael. The private wedding ended a weekend that included a beachside celebration at the exclusive El Dorado Golf and Beach Club. – The National staff
Salman Khan releases Kick mobile game
Salman Khan and Disney India's Interactive business have released a mobile game app based on the actor's forthcoming movie Kick, out in the UAE on Thursday. "We wanted to create an interactive experience of our movie for fans. The mobile game developed by Disney India is exciting and easy to play, it is engaging. I hope my fans will enjoy playing the game," said Khan. The game features the character Devil – a desi Robin Hood who has to get past various obstacles including security alarms, lasers and manholes. Kick is an action comedy directed by Sajid Nadiadwala and stars Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. – The National staff
