Each day we'll be selecting a few choice nuggets from the film festival's schedule that we think are definitely worth a viewing. Here is a selection for day two, assuming you've all recovered from the opening party last night (to be honest, we're struggling a little).
The Battle of Algiers Unless you've seen it a thousand times already, there's really no excuse not to watch arguably the most influential film of all time. Gillo Pontecorvo's tension-filled 1966 masterpiece set during the Algerian revolution in the 1950s captures urban guerrilla warfare like nothing else, no doubt why it has been used as an informative tool by everyone from the US military to international insurgency groups. A classic. Marina Mall, Vox 1, 7.30pm
Le Grand Soire A dark comedy littered with satirical gold, French duo Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern picked up Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize in Cannes for this film, in which a straitlaced salesman falls under the influence of his greying punk brother. To conform or not to conform, this shows there are absurdities and hypocrisies on either side. Marina Mall, Vox 2, 9.30pm
A Hijacking Piracy might not have been hitting the headlines as much recently, but it's a subject that has provided a creative spark for filmmakers. This psychological Danish drama focuses on the negotiations being made to secure the release of a cargo ship hijacked in the Indian Ocean and the toll taken on its crew. It stars Søren Malling, who you might remember from the first series of The Killing (the Danish one). Marina Mall, Vox 6, 9.45pm
