Comedian Jo Koy is going back to his roots. The Filipino-American has announced his Netflix special Jo Koy: In His Elements will be released on Friday, June 12, and will have a special focus on Filipino culture. “This is that one special where I was like, I need to go back home, the Philippines. I need to show people where my mum’s from,” he says in a video posted on Instagram. “I had this great idea where I said ‘Let me bring a bunch of my friends who are Filipinos who live in America that haven’t been back in the Philippines. Let’s show them how beautiful the country is; let’s show them how beautiful the people are. Let’s just do a show!'” he said. The comedian, 48, will also shine a light on other Filipino-American performers by welcoming to the stage famed breakdancer Ronnie, Grammy-winning producer !Llmind, singer-songwriter Inigo Pascual, and comedians Andrew Lopez, Joey Guila and Andrew Orolfo. Koy finishes the video by saying: “Everything about this special is Filipino; the cameramen, the people in the audience, the people who own the venue. “We have to embrace our culture and have a great time. I can’t wait for the world to see it. Love you guys. I’m so proud of this one. My mum is going to be even more proud because I finally brought Netflix to the Philippines. Mahal kita (I love you).” The funnyman has already had two specials on the streaming platform: 2017's Jo Koy: Live from Seattle, and Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot, which was shot last year in Hawaii. Back in January, fans in the UAE got to see Koy live in Dubai when he performed at the Coca-Cola Arena as part of his Just Kidding world tour. During his set, he joked about his time in the UAE, with a particular focus on bidets, his love for Nineties R'n'B and, of course, the Filipino population in the country.
