Jerry Seinfeld returns to stand-up comedy



Jerry Seinfeld is bringing back his live stand-up comedy to New York City – the place he says he learnt to be funny. The October and November shows will be the first time he'll present full live comedy performances since his 1998 Broadway show, I'm Telling You for the Last Time. "I was born in Brooklyn, went to school in Queens and started out as a comedian in Manhattan. I feel like New York City taught me how to be funny," he said. – AP

Billie Joe Armstrong joins The Voice

The Green Day vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong has joined the US singing show The Voice as a mentor to Christina Aguilera's team when the series returns on September 10. "It's about giving artists a little bit of guidance and direction without a complete makeover," said Armstrong. As the talent contest field grows more crowded, shows are competing for big-name music stars. American Idol is adding Mariah Carey as a judge, and The X Factor signed Britney Spears. – AP

Stewart, Sanders apologise for affair

Kristen Stewart has publicly apologised to her boyfriend and Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson following reports she had a brief affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. "I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused," she said in a statement. "This momentary indiscretion has jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob." It was quickly followed by an apology from the 41-year-old Sanders to his wife and two children. Stewart has been in a relationship for several years with Pattinson. Madonna gets boos from Paris crowd

A Madonna concert drew boos when the pop star left the stage after just 45 minutes. The 2,700-strong audience, including the actor Pierce Brosnan, remained in place, expecting an encore, and the mood turned sour as it became clear the 53-year-old singer was not coming back. YouTube videos showed angry fans shouting "refund!". The concert was announced after France's far-right National Front threatened to sue Madonna after she showed a video at a Bastille Day concert in Paris with an image of the party's leader with a swastika on her forehead. – AP

Selena star Lupe Ontiveros dies at 69

Lupe Ontiveros, who appeared in scores of TV shows and movies including Desperate Housewives, Selena and As Good As It Gets died on Thursday after a brief battle with liver cancer. She was 69. Her Selena co-star Jennifer Lopez said in a statement: "I'm tremendously saddened by the news of Lupe's passing. She was a great actress and will truly be missed." – AP
