It's official. Fans of the spooky 1993 Halloween cult film classic Hocus Pocus are getting a sequel, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy set to return as the Sanderson Sisters. To premiere on Disney+ in 2022, the sequel will see three young women accidentally bring the sisters, hilarious witches, back to modern-day Salem, Massachusetts. They must then figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world. "Sistaaaahs! It's been 300 years ... But we're BACK! #HocusPocus2 arrives Fall 2022 on @DisneyPlus," Midler, who played Winifred Sanderson, posted on Twitter after the announcement. Sex and the City star Parker, who played Sarah Sanderson, also posted on Instagram. "Yep. I'm ready. To run. Amok, amok, amok, amok," she said. Directed by Kenny Ortega, the 1993 action comedy was not a critical or commercial success, but has since attained cult status as viewership spikes annually on Halloween. Choreographer and director Anne Fletcher (Step Up, The Proposal), will helm Hocus Pocus 2. Director Adam Shankman, known for films such as A Walk to Remember and the 2007 remake of Hairspray, was initially attached to the project. "My heart is broken that my directing duties on #Disenchanted are prohibiting me from directing @sarahjessicaparker @bettemidler and @kathynajimy in #hocuspocus2 but I’m handing over the reigns to the amazing @567and8 (#AnneFletcher) but I’ll be there exec producing with producer @mrsleshem and helping bring the #sandersonsisters into your homes," he posted on Instagram. Fletcher said the movie will be "for everyone". "We should be laughing every day, and there is so much fun to be had with these three unbelievable women playing delicious characters from such a beloved film," she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I am so grateful to be able to play a part in bringing these witches back to life, and to be working with my friends at Disney again makes it all the more special. I can’t wait to get started.” Watch the trailer of the 1993 film below:
