Comic-Con 2019: new trailers for 'Snowpiercer', 'Rick and Morty', and more

San Diego's annual Comic-Con has always been a major pop culture event, especially for those who love film and TV. This year's event was no different as major studios and networks unveiled new trailers for upcoming releases. So, in case you've missed it, here's we've rounded up some of the best trailers that have been released from the yearly convention: Release date: September 6, 2019 There was a lot to like about the 2017 remake of It . The film followed a terrifying clown who preyed on children via their most nightmarish fears. At the end of that version, viewers saw great potential for a sequel, and fan speculation ran rampant online. Luckily, a follow-up was greenlit shortly after. Fans of the Stephen King novel will know that the events of the first film were only half the story, and that when the kids to grow up, they will have to face Pennywise the clown again. The cast in this sequel is impressive too, with stars like Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader joining the fold. Bill Skarsgard is also set to reprise his role as Pennywise. Release date: Fall 2019 The first full trailer for the new HBO and BBC collaborated show His Dark Materials was unveiled. The show is based on Philip Pullman’s bestselling trilogy. It is set in a world where a person’s soul exists outside their body in the form of talking animals, which are called daemons. The story focuses on protagonist Lyra, a young girl who embarks on an adventure when she’s stumbles upon an organisation responsible for the disappearance of children. Her quest takes her through multiple worlds including our own. James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda also star in the series. Release date: October 2019 HBO revealed a three-minute trailer of their TV sequel adaptation of Alan Moore's Watchmen . The Watchmen are a group of vigilante superheroes who are driven into a corner by the government and are struggling with how society grapples with accepting them. The film adaptation, directed by Zack Snyder, was released in 2009 to a mixed reception. In the new trailer, we see many famous faces including Regina King, Jeremy Irons, and Don Johnson, although their roles are unknown yet. The storyline seems to be a continuation of the graphic novel and the film adapted from it. Release date: November 2019 The popular animated series is set to return after finishing its third season almost two years ago. The teaser released at Comic-Con features Taika Waititi as an alien named Glootie whom Rick hires as an intern. Not much else about the season is revealed but it’s still enough to get fans excited about the show’s return. Season 4 is set to premiere in November 2019 with 10 episodes. Release date: December 13, 2019 Amazon's popular sci-fi show The Expanse is back with a fourth series. The intergalactic action adventure stars Steven Strait, Cas Anvar, and Dominique Tipper. The show’s plot revolves around a police detective who works on an asteroid belt, and has a hand in discovering a large conspiracy that threatens the colony he patrols. The fourth series looks to be bigger and better than before, and since the introduction of Amazon Prime, every member in the UAE can tune in when the new season drops. Release date: December 20, 2019 The classic musical Cats has finally been turned into a film. It features a star-studded cast that includes Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, James Corden and (in her first on-screen role) Taylor Swift. The cast will perform some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most famous tunes from the show. Reaction of the trailer has been mixed. Release date: Expected early 2020 The aptly (if a bit unimaginatively) titled Star Trek: Picard will revolve around the title character played by Sir Patrick Stewart. Based on the limited information in the trailer, Captain Jean-Luc Picard still finds himself wistfully gazing starwards, despite 20 years having passed since he last captained the USS Enterprise . So, it is no surprise that he would take on the challenge when he encounters a young woman who requires his assistance. While the artistic style of the new Amazon Prime show appears to follow the visually spectacular Star Trek: Discovery , Sir Patrick's gravitas and links to both Voyager and The Next Generation are likely to keep fans happy. As should the appearance of Brent Spiner as the somewhat evolved B-4. Release date: Spring 2020 Remember Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 movie about a train forced to constantly circumnavigate the globe following an environmental disaster? Well, it's getting a long-form TV reboot courtesy of Turner Broadcast and Orphan Black creator Graeme Manson. The train will still operate according to a rigid class structure, with the unfortunate souls at the back of the train a kind of peasant worker’s army for the upper classes at the front. But this time around we’ll have a minimum of two seasons of the show to explore the concept. Alita and Requiem for a Dream 's Jennifer Connelly (in her first TV starring role) and Velvet Buzzsaw 's Daveed Diggs star in the TBS series. Release date: June 26, 2020 The sequel to 1986's Top Gun sees the return of Tom Cruise as Maverick. The trailer doesn't give away too many details of the new film except that it takes takes place 34 years after the original with Maverick as a flight instructor at Top Gun. The movie also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and Ed Harris. Val Kilmer is also poised to make an appearance in the film by reprising his role (although though he's not seen in the trailer) as Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky. Release date: Sometime in 2020 The new trailer for the third series of Westworld introduces a different futuristic world, set in future Los Angeles, and picks up where the last season left off. Following the massacre in Westworld, Dolores (played by Rachel Evan Wood) is finally free, and along with other hosts from the defunct theme park has slipped into human society. Maeve (Thandie Newton) doesn’t seem to have been so lucky, and we see her apparently now acting as a host in a Second World War-themed park. Dolores appears to have made a human friend, played by Breaking Bad 's Aaron Paul, and the interesting relationship robot/human dynamic looks set to be a key factor in the new season.
