Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi was involved in a car crash in Mumbai on Saturday. The star, 69, was taken to hospital after a car she was travelling in overtook and collided with another vehicle on the Mumbai-to-Pune expressway in Maharashtra. Her driver Kamlesh Kamath, 38, was booked for rash and negligent driving, Mumbai police said on Sunday. He is said to have suffered minor injuries in the crash. Azmi is undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Andheri and is said to be in a stable condition. Her husband, lyricist Javed Akhtar, was travelling in a separate car at the time of the accident. Mumbai police said the Tata Safari that Azmi had been travelling in was sent to the Regional Transport Office for inspection to ascertain whether there was any fault with the vehicle that could have caused the driver to lose control. Dr Santosh Shetty, executive director of Kokilaben Ambani Hopsital, said: "Azmi is recuperating. She is stable and under observation. No surgery, operation was performed during the night ... she is undergoing medical treatment." Azmi is a veteran actress, starting her career in 1974. She has won several awards and has starred in more than 100 films, including <em>Ankur</em>, <em>Masoom</em> and <em>Godmother</em>.
