Visual Utterance at Cube Arts

There is still time to catch Visual Utterance, a show of calligraphic art from all over the world showing at Cube Arts.

Chinese artists and Arabic artists from different generations have their work displayed across the three levels of the relatively new gallery in DIFC.

Curated by the gallery owner and director Lulwah Al Humoud, she says that the show casts a new light on this common subject.

“Each pieces of art one is like a sentence or a word said in a different way,” she says. “They are the written form of communication expressed in art.”

It features a selection of pieces from last year’s Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial such as Hazem El Mestikawy, an Egyptian artist who uses architectural structure in his work. Another notable artist is Talal Al Zaid, an artist who started as a graffiti artist from Saudi and Jamal Abdul Rahim, from Bahrain who is a classical print maker and who has two lithographs in this show.

“If we think of language, the letters are codes and they form picutres in our heads,” says Al Humoud. “This show is about symbolism, beauty and aesthetics and deep knowledge. All the art communicates this.”
