Today I got a sneak peek at the excellent exhibition that opens at three branches of Ayyam Gallery tomorrow. Apex Generation features the work of five painters who have responded in their own very varied ways to the uprising in Syria.
By choosing the medium of painting, they are continuing the long and rich tradition of artists in both Syria and Lebanon and fragments of those who came before them can be identified in the work.
All this is expertly explained by Maymanah Farhat in the accompanying publication Syria's Apex Generation, which will launch tomorrow night with a talk at the Alserkal Avenue space. One of the five artists Mohannad Orabi will be in conversation fellow artist Safwan Dahoul, Khaled Samawi, the gallery owner and Farhat, who is in Dubai for the opening.
Apex Generation will run concurrently in the DIFC branch in Dubai as well as in Beirut, where it opens on Wednesday.
