Part of the historic buildings in London's Covent Garden seems to have been chopped off and is now mysteriously hanging in the air. The art installation, from British artist Alex Chinneck, sees a section of the Market Building magically levitating over the Piazza and is called Take my Lightning but Don't Steal my Thunder
Combining art, architecture and theatre design, Chinneck was inspired by the performance culture that is synonymous with the neighbourhood, to make the 40-foot-long building appear to be floated over 10 feet into the air.
“My objective is to create an accessible artwork that makes a harmonious but breath-taking contribution to its historic surroundings, leaving a lasting and positive impression upon the cultural landscape of Covent Garden and in the minds of its many visitors”, he says. “The hovering building introduces contemporary art to traditional architecture, performing a magic trick of spectacular scale to present the everyday world in an extraordinary way”.
The construction of the hovering installation took three months to craft, paint and construct and a team of professionals to put it together and we recommend anyone who is in the British capital this month to make sure to check it out.
* Take my Lightning but Don't Steal my Thunder will be on display daily on the East Piazza of Covent Garden until 24th October
