Finnish artist Soile Yli-Mayry has unveiled a compelling new set of works in Dubai.
Bringing together 30 paintings mainly from the past two years, the exhibition opened at Fann-Á-Porter in Mall of the Emirates this week, and is on display until November 30.
The internationally acclaimed artist is known for her distinct abstract style, constructed using a mix of thick and thin coats in striking primary colours, with jagged lines and textures cut into the paint with a palette knife, creating a 3-D effect.
Mainly a collection of portraits, Soile Yli-Mayry said the works offer a window into their subjects' interior life.
"I've always been very interested in what's happening inside a person," said the artist during an interview at the exhibition's launch.
"We have words, but what is happening inside human beings is something only art can explain."
In her 30-year career. Yli-Mayry has exhibited in more than 30 countries, including 300 solo shows in Japan alone. This is her sixth exhibition in the UAE.
