Things lighten up in Sharjah every year at this time with a certain glow coming over the emirate thanks to the annual lights festival.
Historical buildings, government departments and notable landmarks were lit up last night and will continue to shine bright until February 17. This year marks the eighth edition of the festival that celebrates science, creativity and heritage.
Stories of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father of the nation will be reflected in the display over the next 11 days with 23 different shows by 24 artists, both internationally and locally renowned, being featured.

The event, which attracted as many as 700,000 visitors to the emirate last year, is organised by the Sharjah Tourism Development Authority and daily shows run from 6pm to 11pm on weekdays and until midnight on weekends.
Locations worth checking out include Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre for Gulf Studies; Sharjah University Campus Avenue; University City Hall; Sharjah Police Academy; Khalid Lagoon; Al Noor Mosque; Palm Oasis; the House of Justice; the Heart of Sharjah and the Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn).

- The nearest international airport to the start of the Chuysky Trakt is in Novosibirsk. - The transport Minibuses run along the Chuysky Trakt but if you want to stop for sightseeing, hire a taxi from Gorno-Altaisk for about US$100 (Dh360) a day. Take a Russian phrasebook or download a translation app. Tour companies such as Altair-Tour ( 7 383 2125115 ) offer hiking and adventure packages.

Emirates fly direct from Dubai to Houston, Texas, where United have direct flights to Managua. Alternatively, from October, Iberia will offer connections from Madrid, which can be reached by both Etihad from Abu Dhabi and Emirates from Dubai.
