They are all coming together today. One thousand army, navy and air force personnel in ornate ceremonial uniforms, 160 horsemen sporting plumed helmets, 1,350 heavily armed soldiers guarding against terrorist attacks, 5,000 police ready for battle against protesters, rooftop snipers, helicopters, patrol boats, sniffer dogs, 1,900 guests including such luminaries as Elton John, Rowan Atkinson and David and Victoria Beckham, 80 heads of state and foreign royalty, lavish department store displays of priceless porcelain and five-foot-tall cakes adorned with Union Jacks, military bands, classical orchestras, church choirs, horse-drawn carriages and Rolls Royce limousines, mountains of food, seas of drink, 1.1 million tourists, two million attending block parties, 8,000 reporters and photographers, 400 from CNN and 850 from the BBC alone, two billion television viewers worldwide and a national holiday costing the British economy £5 billion.

Why?

Two people are getting married.

The groom is handsome, the bride radiant. Someday, decades from now, they will probably become the King and Queen of Great Britain.

So, why not a bit of a knees up? Congratulations to Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
