Punk, hip-hop, rave: Music genres born out of the social circumstances of the artists that championed them. But few could claim the universal, enduring popularity that reggae music has achieved over the last four decades. And that is largely thanks to the genius of one man.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Bob Marley, the Jamaican singer who was at the forefront of the popularisation of reggae music and the Rastafarian movement.
Although he died at the age of 36, Marley enjoyed a glittering career, his music spreading a message of peace, love and understanding. Songs like One love, Could you be loved and No woman, no cry made him a household name across the world.
After he died from cancer in 1981, his music and ideas continued to influence generations of fans. Jann Wenner, the editor of Rolling Stone magazine, called him he "Third World's first pop superstar", while the best-selling record Exodus by Bob Marley and the Wailers was nominated the greatest album of the 20th century by Time magazine in 1999.
And throughout his short life, he never veered from his ideals. "Reggae is a music that has plenty fight. But only the music should fight, not the people," he once said.
Today, Marley's message remains as relevant as ever.
