NHL: Zetterberg forces overtime and Weiss nets winner for Red Wings

RALEIGH, North Carolina // Stephen Weiss scored at 3:13 of overtime as the Detroit Red Wings rallied to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Friday for their first road win since moving to the NHL’s Eastern Conference from the West in the offseason.

Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg scored with 16.4 seconds left in the third to tie the game at 2-all, and Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots in goal.

Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe scored in their debuts with Carolina, which led 2-0 in the third period but lost its opener for the fourth time in five seasons.

Elsewhere, the New York Islanders won their season opener for the first time since 2007, beating the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in a shootout.

Matt Moulson scored the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round and Evgeni Nabokov stopped all six Devils shots.

Martin Brodeur had 23 saves in his first game of the season for the Devils. Brodeur stopped the Islanders first five shootout attempts before Moulson put a shot just under the crossbar.

Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson scored with 1:35 remaining in the third period and Craig Anderson stopped 35 shots to lead the Senators to a 1-0 season-opening win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Former Sabres forward Clarke MacArthur set up the goal to spoil the Sabres’ home opener.

Buffalo goalkeeper Ryan Miller had a solid outing despite the loss, stopping 45 shots.

The Calgary Flames got goals from Jiri Hudler and Curtis Glencross 42 seconds apart in the third period to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3.

Rookie Sean Monahan picked up his first NHL goal and TJ Galiardi had a goal and an assist for the Flames, who opened their season with a 5-4 loss at Washington.

Goalie Joey MacDonald made 29 saves.

Winnipeg’s Devin Setoguchi scored two goals in the third period to lead the Jets over the Los Angeles Kings 5-3 in their home opener.

Ondrej Pavelec finished with 33 saves for Winnipeg.

In Denver, Semyon Varlamov stopped 26 shots and PA Parenteau scored two goals as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators 3-1.

Patrick Bordeleau had a goal and rookie Nathan MacKinnon had an assist for the Avalanche, who have won their first two games under new coach Patrick Roy.
